Non-Traditional Wedding Dress Ideas

Non-Traditional Wedding Dress Ideas for 2009

When you are asked to imagine a wedding, the first image that comes to mind is beautiful bride in a stunning white wedding gown, with lots of tulle, lace and pearl accessories. The white veil, the long train are also associated with that white wedding image.

However, there are many brides today who are opting for non-traditional wedding dresses - this appeals to brides who want to bring in color into their wedding dress, those who want to be unique and special, and prefer elegant simplicity to fussy adornments. A lot of brides in other cultures opt for colorful bridal dresses for their wedding. In fact, white as a tradition in Western weddings was brought about during the Victorian era, before that Western brides wore wedding dresses with color.

Contrary to belief, opting for non-traditional wedding dress does not mean you cannot afford to purchase one of those expensive designer white wedding dresses that are popular in bridal boutiques. Non-traditional wedding dresses can also be quite expensive depending on your designer. So do not imagine that you would be viewed as "cheap" by picking a non-traditional wedding dress.

By picking a non-traditional wedding dress, you can be sure to stand out and be remembered by people. While the trend for non-traditional wedding dress is picking up, it is still not that prevalent for you to be considered as just one of the many. A non-traditional wedding dress is a sure way for you to be special!

There are a lot of pretty colors to choose from, and here are some ideas to get you started on picking out the perfect non-traditional wedding dress.

Winter Weddings | Designer Winter Wedding Dresses

Winter will be upon us very soon! While some of us are dreading the onset of winter, others yet are relishing it. The select few (some say crazy ones) who love winter, will also be the ones to dream about magical winter weddings. Yours truly included.

Here are some fantastic ideas on how to hold a magical winter wedding.

Winter Wedding Magic

Great Winter Tips For Your Unique Wedding
By Paul J Easton

When we think about wintertime, the thoughts coming to our mind are those of snowflakes, pine cones and hanging icicles. Use the winter season and make your theme of a wonderful "white" wedding.

Make your winter wedding special with these unique ideas:

Wedding Colors

Choose your favorite color you want to use for your wedding theme. You can have the traditional colors, such as red and green for the winter season. You can also consider silver and white with crystal accents. Use your favorite color for choosing your wedding dress, the invitation cards, flowers and other decorations.

Invitations

Winter weddings are usually held indoors and they call for more formal invitations. You will find a lot of wedding cards for your winter themed wedding invitation. A fresh idea for a formal winter wedding invitation is to write your invitation on frosted Plexiglas with white or black scripted ink and send them out in silver envelopes. Cocktails and Drinks Take advantage of the winter season. Offer your guest outstanding cocktails and a mouthwatering menu that will keep in your guest's mind for years to come.

Offer your guests a winter cocktail after the official ceremony, such as a Pomegranate Champagne Cocktail. It is a unique twist to the traditional wedding toast of regular bubbles. You can also offer your guests an exclusive warm drink, just right for wintertime. A comforting drink can be a hot chocolate and warm apple cider. Surprise your guests with something new. Have a look on the internet which cocktails will fit to your winter theme.

Wedding menu

You can't go wrong, when you offer a warm soup for your guests as a starter. Even a tasty noodle soup with pasta in heart shapes, with small pieces of meat and fresh vegetables would be a great idea. As a main meal traditionally you could have a tender beef roast, surrounded with potatoes and a lot of different vegetables (red cabbage). In modern times you also have the option to offer a delicious fish or tasty chicken instead of beef. You should have some vegetarian meals on offer as an option for those guests, they do not eat meat. Surprise your guests and finish your meal with a sorbet in a shape of a snow man, surrounded with hot berries.

Decoration

If you are planning a winter themed wedding, most important part is the decoration. Of course, there are not many opportunities for having the wedding outdoor. To get an indoor place such as a big ball room at a club or school would be ideal. The wedding location is very important. It should be a pleasant place, where your guests can enjoy themselves. Are you looking for the latest decoration trends? Ask your friends to build up two real snowmen at the entrance outside, if it is cold enough outside. When using personalized name cards and serviettes with winter designs to match the winter themed colors are also great assets to the table decoration.

If you do not like the idea of fresh flowers for your table decorations, then try this:

Use white or silver helium balloons with winter themed ribbons and tie them up to little decorative sandbags and leave them on the tables. Those balloons look great and this idea is not a very expensive either.

Weddings are always such special days that you want to create and organize something, which makes your wedding unique. I hope that all the tips will help to plan the best event of your life.

Couture Bridal Gowns | Blue Wedding Dress

Did you ever wonder where the phrase "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" that became a wedding custom come from?

Well, so did we! So we did some research on it, and it turns out it has its roots in a poem from England.

The complete poem is:

Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

This is what we found out:

A sixpence is a coin that was minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967. It was made of silver and worth six pennies. So this wedding tradition is definitely English, and many sources say that it began in the Victorian era.

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. "Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past. "Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead. "Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.

A silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted, and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.

And...
Blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true."

So today, we focus on couture bridal gowns in blue!

Couture Bridal Gowns | Meaning of Couture

What Does Couture Mean?

A lot of people throw around the word "couture" withour really understanding what it means. Couture is simply high fashion designing and dressmaking. This goes back in time to the mid-1800s in Europe, where couture garments were specially made (tailored) for the customer. Couture garments are designed to look absolutely stunning on clients, with fits customized to the client's body, way of movement, and personal style. The detailing on couture garments such as beading and embroidery is always done by hand, representing hours and sometimes months of labor.

Today, couture garments also require customization and fittings.

With ready-made bridal gowns to choose over couture bridal gowns, and at lesser price tags too, why would a bride opt for couture bridal gowns?

Take some time to read this expert article (see below) on why there are still many brides out there who opt for couture bridal gowns.

Why Choose a Custom Or Couture Wedding Gown?
By Laura Firenze

There are thousands of wedding gowns from which a bride can choose, so many in fact that it can seem absolutely overwhelming. With so many choices available, does it really make sense to consider having your wedding gown custom made? The answer is yes, and it is not only the rich and famous who order one-of-a-kind wedding dresses. These are some of the reasons why you might want to choose a custom or couture bridal gown.

First of all, there is something that needs to be cleared up, and that is the true meaning of the word couture. The term has been misappropriated and misused to the point where many women have lost sight of what it even means. When you see an off-the-rack mass-manufacturer of wedding dresses calling themselves "Such and such Couture Bridal", you should be aware that they are trying to make themselves into something they are not. Couture is always a unique garment that is carefully handmade for one specific person, and made using only the finest materials and techniques. Haute couture refers properly only to a group of specially designated French designers, although it is reasonable enough for an American designer handcrafting top quality custom wedding gowns to refer to them as couture as well.

The reasons to order a custom or couture gown are as varied as the women who do so. You may be surprised to hear that one of the most common reasons is for fit. If a bride has a difficult figure or is simply two different sizes on the top and bottom, she may actually find it less expensive to have her gown custom made by a talented seamstress than to order a wedding gown that needs drastic alterations or pattern changes.

To make a distinction, true haute couture bridal gowns run into the six figures, but a well made custom wedding dress from a local designer can run you much, much less. It depends on where you live and who you are hiring, but for a top quality custom gown, expect it to start at a bit more than a comparable gown from a good designer. (Of course keep in mind that you will not have the alteration charges for a custom made dress that you would for one you order.) Handmade gowns will naturally be in a completely different price range than the mass-produced dresses, but that is really apples to oranges.

Certainly one of the other primary reasons to order a custom gown for your wedding is style. This can be as simple as liking the bodice from one dress and the skirt from another and asking your seamstress to make one gown combining the two designs. In other cases, a bride may have a desire for something that is offbeat that she would never find in a readymade bridal gown. Having your gown custom made just for you allows you all sorts of options such as unique materials, interesting colors, or an unusual cut or silhouette.

If you do opt for a handcrafted gown, be sure to pay equal attention to your accessories. The wrong ones can detract from the special wedding dress that you invested so much of yourself into creating. Timeless pieces like bridal jewelry sets with a cultured pearl bracelet, necklace, and pair of earrings are one lovely idea. Brides who like to mix the classic with the contemporary can layer and stack some bold and fun crystal bracelets in with the cultured pearl bridal bracelet.

Custom made wedding dresses have many advantages over those that are already designed. If you are looking for a unique gown that fits your vision of a dream bridal gown and fits you to a tee, you will be happiest with a gown that is made especially for you. The most important reason to choose a custom or couture wedding gown is that it will be a true original, just like the bride who wears it.

Laura is interested in wedding planning and wedding trends including jewelry, receptions and gifts. Cultured pearl bridal bracelets are always elegant and tasteful.

Color Options For Designer Wedding Dresses
By Joanna Brown

Once upon a time, wedding dresses were all white, beaded lace and floor-length gowns that trailed across the floor in a graceful manner. It seemed that all brides were offered the same limited selections for their wedding, regardless of their personality or individual tastes. Too often, brides who preferred a dress with more pizzazz and color were sadly left with too few options.

Thankfully, times have changed. Today, the modern bride has many more styles from which to choose her wedding gown, and her color selections are limited only by her own imagination and sense of style. Now that some of the world's most talented designers are diving into wedding fashions and creating gowns as colorful as they are elegant, this truly is a significant and wonderful time to get married.

While there are some brides who love the thought of walking down the aisle in the same bold hues as her beautiful bridal party, most only want a way to add their own flair to their already classic beauty and timeless elegance. In order to help narrow down all the fabulous choices of colors from which to choose, below is an introduction to the color options available for designer wedding dresses.

Change the Color

Sometimes, while shopping for the perfect wedding gown, you find the dress of your dreams but are disappointed with the bland white color that every other bride seems to be donning. Instead of settling for a dress you are not completely happy with, first check to see if the specific style you want is available in any additional colors. By utilizing the expertise available, you may find that the designer original, complete with an Alencon lace trimmed train that you simply adore, is also available in a breathtaking champagne hue. The way the light subtly diffuses off of this classic and intricate fabric will be nothing short of eye-catching, even on the bride with the perfectly porcelain complexion.

Perhaps it is not the white dress that leaves you wanting more, but the fact that so many white gowns can appear insipid once you try it on. An excellent alternative is to look for a dress in the most brilliant shade of diamond white that one can find. A strapless ball gown with a full, flowing panel-draped skirt is sure to be as exquisite on your special day as it is on the hanger. English Net paired with a brilliant white ribbon around your waist will ensure this dress attracts many murmured "oohs" and "aahs" as you take those first steps down the aisle towards the love of your life. To complete your timeless style, a hand-draped bodice is another stunning feature available in many modern designer wedding gowns.

Accent Your Waist

Giving the unsuspecting eye a place to rest can enhance the natural beauty of nearly any shade of wedding gown. Consider the strapless Silk Organza ball gown in ivory. This timeless gown is a versatile and classic style complete with a pleated organza bodice. However, a simple modification around the waist can take this dress from elegant to extraordinary. By adding a belt of Panne Velvet with a painstaking crystal trim, this dress adds the illusion of color without taking away from its elegant charm.

Another option for the strapless ball gown in silk satin is to add a wide obi belt with dazzling crystals. A particularly stunning option is to add the belt in a contrasting color, or one that beautifully ties in with the hues of your bridal party. Windsor blue against a white dress is a look that can standout without going overboard. An even better option is a belt that also sports a bow and full-length sash tying in the back, adding a splash of subdued color to this A-line gown in an elaborate and dramatic way.

Add an Embellishment

Perhaps the most stunning look for the modern bride is the bold use of black on your Silk Taffeta gown. This sweetheart neckline demands to be admired with its beaded bodice encrusted with crystals referred to as "black ice." These daring gems are featured prominently across the bodice of the gown and in a band down the side of the skirt. The train features handmade black bows illuminating youthful elegance. For the extra-daring bride, a black wrap can complete this look in a glamorous fashion.

While all of the jewels and gemstones can provide an attention-grabbing addition to the standard silk and cotton Faille gown, they are not the only thing that makes this unique dropped torso ivory dress one of as kind. Subtle satin sashes which are adorned with additional jewels and feathers in rich shades of black and brown make this gown a must-have this season. Your guests will not know whether to admire your sense of style or the way you look in this feminine and flirtatious original.
